I’m Helen Billows
A psychologist, EMDR therapist and EMDR consultant committed to helping you feel better, not just teaching you to cope.
I’ve spent eight years dedicated to trauma therapy and delivered over 7,000 EMDR sessions.
When I’m not wrangling my toddler, you’ll find me deep in trauma research, reading the latest on EMDR, or diving into yet another advanced trauma training. I stay at the forefront of trauma therapy because it produces better outcomes (I know this because the research says so).
As host of The Trauma Nerd Podcast, I bring the same clinical rigour to public trauma insights - but I also make it funny, and most importantly, useable.
I want to help you feel better, not just learn how to manage better. Coping strategies have their place, but I focus on addressing the root cause to help you achieve genuine and lasting change.
You’re sick of being taught coping strategies.
You’re sick of therapists telling you to breathe. You want to actually feel better.
You understand it. But you still feel exactly the same.
This is the dilemma of trauma - you can know what’s happening, why it’s happening, and even know how to help yourself when it comes up. But the reactions and feelings are still there. Frustrating, I know.
What I want for you isn’t a bigger toolkit of coping strategies. It’s for you to leave the past in the past, and actually feel better.
So how do we actually get there?
Not with more coping strategies, and not by talking around it a dozen more times. By addressing the root cause.
EDMR therapy in Adelaide
I primarily use EMDR (eye-movement desensitisation and reprocessing), a research-backed, trauma-focused therapy with a significant international evidence base. I take the outcomes of my work seriously: I’m dedicated to your genuine healing, and I won’t settle for symptom management when root-cause work is possible.
EMDR beyond PTSD
EMDR isn't just for trauma. It can also help with anxiety, phobias and depression. When we address the root cause, the presenting problem often shifts with it.
EMDR therapist consultation
I supervise EMDR therapists working toward completing their training, gaining accreditation, or sharpening their skills. I am committed to helping you get your clients the results they've read about.

Accredited EMDR Therapist in Adelaide
I’ve spent eight years dedicated to trauma therapy and delivered over 7,000 EMDR sessions.
I hold consultant accreditation through EMDRAA; short of becoming a certified EMDR trainer, that’s the highest level of EMDR credentialing available in Australia, held by only a small number of psychologists nationally.
I’m also an EMDR training facilitator, part of a small group of psychologists selected by national training providers to assist with training delivery in Australia.
